Simplicity is Honda’s New Interior Design Language

Category : News

As the tastes of the world are changing, simplicity is something that modern brands are gearing up towards. Likewise, Honda is wholeheartedly supporting this endeavor with their future interior design language from 2021 and beyond.

As cars are becoming increasingly high-tech, with digital instrument clusters and infotainment systems cluttering up the interior, it’s high time to take a step back and bring back the interiors that are free from visual clutter.

Dubbed simplicity and “something”, Honda is showcasing a direction that aims to move away from the cluttered, overwhelming approach some automakers and cars have brought to the masses. The company’s main focus is to reduce the complexity of the interior layout, which creates a more advanced user experience overall.

Another key element is the approach to maximize the cabin space, while minimizing space needed for mechanical and electronic components.

This is a design philosophy that is based on the classic human-centered designs of early Honda vehicles, in which Honda is looking to reduce the complexity in which vehicles are built.

The concept is simple: “simplicity” will be Honda’s design language for the whole model range, while “something” will be the personality and appeal unique to each model.

“Simplicity in design requires not only a strong philosophy, but a discipline toward the user experience,” Jonathan Norman, Creative Lead for Honda Interior Design in the United States, said. “We’ve heard from designers working for other brands who say they were inspired by the simple, human-centered design of old Hondas.”

One thing that won’t change that much compared to the current interior design language of the brand is the focus on thin pillars, a low cowl, and a large greenhouse. This creates a roomy feeling inside the cabin, as well as excellent visibility with a clear view of the road and the environment outside.

“We are pursuing this design language with new Hondas we’re designing in the studio now,” Norman said. “It’s our ‘simple’ approach to design with the ‘and something’ that will help differentiate each product and make your future Honda vehicles something you want to drive and are excited to use.”

The 2022 Honda Civic is the automaker’s first foray into its new interior design concept. The Honda Civic has been in production since 1972 and is currently in its tenth-gen version, while the 2022 model is expected to make its debut this year Honda has officially revealed the 2022 Civic, the eleventh generation version that is set to go on sale later this year.

Here are some of the top changes you can expect for the latest Honda Civic 2022 model.

1. Styling

The design of the new-gen Civic has drawn inspiration from the Accord. Honda seems to have aimed for a clean and mature look for the 2022 Civic following the new philosophy of ‘Man-Maximum, Machine Minimum’, bidding farewell to the curvy yet angular design, while still managing to retain the sporty character of the car.

2. Interior

The 2022 Honda Civic has adopted the new “Simplicity and Something” interior design ethos. The real goal is introducing an uncluttered layout with lesser distractions as well as fewer infrequently used buttons. The interior of the new model looks much more premium and cleaner than the outgoing model. There are fewer buttons, but physical controls have been retained. The sedan features a retro-looking band of hexagonal mesh that integrates the A/C vents, along with a free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. The steering wheel is also new, as well as the rest of the controls.

3. Features

A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is offered as standard, while the range-topping Touring trim gets a larger 9.0-inch screen along with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered as standard, while the larger screen also allows for wireless mirroring capabilities.

4. Mechanical Updates

The new Civic has been built on a stiffer platform, which serves as a base for its redesigned suspension. The front suspension elements have been tweaked to provide the steering with a stronger self-centring, while the rear suspension has been revised for improved ride quality. Honda also says that the power steering has been tuned to provide an improved steering feel.

The new-gen model aims to further improve the Civic’s foothold globally, and hence, Honda has added more tech, improved fuel economy while also introducing new safety features for the 2022 model year.

With this new interior design ethos, we’re excited to see where Honda will take the design, and we wholeheartedly approve of a simplified and streamlined design.
